Elementary at Montessori Reggio Academy (Grades 1-5)

Admission into the elementary program requires that children are 6 years old on or before September 1st.

In an exciting research style of learning, elementary children work in small groups on a variety of projects, which spark the imagination and engage the intellect.  Lessons by trained Montessori teachers direct children toward activities which help them to develop reasoning abilities and life skills.  At this age, the appetite of children to understand the universe and their place in it directs the elementary work toward all aspects of culture.

Elementary studies include geography, biology, history, language, mathematics, science, music, and art.  Exploration of each area is encouraged through trips outside the classroom to community resources, such as a library, planetarium, botanical garden, science center, factory or hospital.  This inclusive approach to education fosters a feeling of connectedness to all humanity and encourages their natural desire to make contributions to the world.

The most alluring bit of leeway of the idealized multi-age classroom to teachers might be that it is lined up with the conviction that children should learn at an individual speed to arrive at their maximum capacity.

Since confident children learn quicker, or more slowly, keeping offspring of a similar age, learning similar ideas will wind up giving up a few, pulling others back and many other benefits. Learning has little to do with age, and significantly more to do with how well they ingest and decipher data, just as their learning style. Presenting children to a blended age bunch climate helps support their learning experience and their advancement in various manners. While nobody appears to know why the vast majority of our schools are isolated by age, at Montessori Reggio Academy, we understand why we don’t follow the standard. Montessori Reggio Academy frees each class up to various kids, uncovering potential in different children that are further along in their improvement cycle, and a couple of steps behind too like, in actuality.

This regard is purposefully established through the first set up of the environment and afterwards setting aside some effort to show concern in “Effortlessness and Courtesy” exercises. These viewpoints, alongside other Montessori standards, establish an environment where youngsters can flourish.

Over the long run, and with intermittent reminding prompts from the classroom environment, the kid will turn out to be more talented in communicating their requirements, and likely decline any control given that could somehow, or another emerges in such a second. Whether in the classroom or at home, training elegance and kindness abilities will benefit your child’s conduct and take into account a more wonderful classroom just as a more charming environment any place the kid may go.

The Individualized Educational Plan

The IEP and Work Plan is utilized in different ways according to the individual needs of the child, as well as the child’s grade level.  It is important to note that teachers and parents have definite expectations for each child, but it is impossible to set a uniform goal for the number of pieces of work a  child should accomplish at a certain grade level.  The amount of work done in a day differs from student to student.  Once the student has made teachers and parents aware of certain capabilities, those capabilities are then used as a guideline for what our expectations of the child should be.  The IEP and work plan allows us, along with the student, to see what areas the student is focusing on the most, and what the student needs to do to create a balanced academic situation.

The important thing to keep in mind about the IEP and work plan is that the quality of a students work, along with the student’s  level of understanding of a piece of work, is far more important than the quantity of work that a child does on any given day. We make every effort to support the student while still challenging their academic mind.

As a student enters their Montessori elementary years, they transition from learning to read to reading to learn. Students are exposed and learn to use a variety of print reference materials including dictionaries, and reference books and material to develop an understanding of how to conduct research and in some cases they will start the use of a computer. Students also begin typing some of their final research paragraphs although most work is still done by hand at this age but there is an introduction to technology that will include typing, practicing research and working online. Screen time is limited in a Montessori Setting.
